Marvin graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in Recreational Therapy. After college Marvin moved to Utah to work at the National Ability Center where he helped facilitate outdoor experiences such as skiing, climbing, biking, equestrian, etc., to those of all ability levels. Along with instructing Marvin worked as a wilderness therapy guide helping students learn confidence in themselves, working as a group, and how to properly advocate for our needs were part of the daily routine. After wilderness therapy Marvin worked as a case manager with the unhoused community working to help clients increase their quality of life through work, housing, education, food, and other basic life essentials. While in graduate school Marvin working for the mobile crisis team doing suicide assessments in the community and helping people get the appropriate level of support they needed. For his internships, Marvin worked at a residential treatment program teaching DBT skills to young adults who were struggling with emotional regulation and outpatient private practice focusing on trauma. After graduating with his Master's Degree in Social Work, Marvin continued private practice work and earned specialties in EMDR, Trauma Focused CBT, and Mindfulness.
Personal
Marvin loves playing in the outdoors. Throughout the winter you can find him sliding on snow via skiing or snowboarding at all times of the day. In the warmer months Marvin likes to spend his time climbing in the desert, biking in the mountains, or hiking around with his dog. Marvin's main motivation for the outdoors is going to remote locations and seeking out new experiences.
Creating Student Success
Meeting people where they’re at find out what motivates them to get to where they want to be is key in building rapports. Whether it’s holding space, challenge others to get outside of their comfort zone, or teaching coping skills to manage our emotions in real time these are all essential for helping others building a life worth living.
